The International Organisation for the Provision of Work for Handicapped Persons – IPWH, the predecessor of Workability International was established in 1987. With the initial growth of the organisation being mainly in Europe the European Union Group of IPWH was established with a separate Board of Directors and Secretariat in 1995. In late 2000, EUG-IPWH established its own legal entity as an Association registered in the Netherlands. With the incorporation and name change of IPWH to Workability International, EUG-IPWH changed to Workability International in 2002.

Organisations joining Workability International within the European geographical area become individual members of Workability Europe. The Region holds a number of conferences within Europe and also its annual conference in conjunction with its AGM. Workability Europe is the largest employer body representing providers of work and employment services to people with disabilities in Europe. It has more than 43 member organisations located in 23 countries. The growing membership provides work programmes for over 1,250,000 disabled people.

Whilst Workability Europe cooperates with the European Institutions and strives to contribute to European Union's Disability and Social Agenda, membership is also increasing from countries within Europe but currently outside the EU.
